When Adventure Time first started, its imaginative world was used to create surreal and unique stories for laughs. For that reason, the 8-minute time slot was perfect. You understood that there were hidden messages within the show which made you wonder what was beyond the humor. However, the jokes were what kept you coming back for more.

Adventure Time has changed over time for the better-- Mostly. Let me explain. The world is much more fleshed out. The characters have added depth, and in my option, the adventures are more clever and epic. However, the episodes now have more plot to show and in the same amount of time as before. In my opinion, this causes the pace of the show to feel rushed. For example, in this episode, Finn is faced with a great and terrible creature. I won't spoil who it is, but I was hoping that episodes from the reveal to the fight was more padded out so you can really understand the conflict.

The main reason for this is due to the format of the show itself. If it was let's say 22-minutes like most shows, then I know that the show would be able to create the emotions that it is trying to convey. I'm still giving this episode 9 stars because it is still everything that you could want in as a continuation of an 8-minute episode. It's just the payoff doesn't feel as impactful as I would want it to be.

Over the years Adventure Time has been a darker show with themes of importance and relevant for the (mostly) teenage audience, a show of silly frivolity for the younger viewers, a show of instructional information for everyone, and at times a show with a surprisingly rich and fleshed out world of complex characters and histories. At its best the show has seasons that do all of these, and many of them in the same episodes – and season 6 is one such season. Speaking generally the season has a narrative arc surrounding Finn's pursuit of the father who abandoned him, but is still alive out there in the universe somewhere; however this also links up with the trajectory of a comet, and the dormant power of the primordial demon Orgalorg. Of course despite these narratives, the season also has time for a prank at a water park, Jake exploring life as a brick in a collapsing building, and many other plots that speak to the complexity of the world of Ooo.

Watching in isolation, and generally not reading the opinions of others while I watch something, I do not know how this season played in terms of reception and ratings, however I do note that Adam Muto stated that season 7 would be 'less heady' than this season, and have more of a focus on simpler stories with the characters. I'll wait and see what this means, but it sounds like they do not want to repeat this sixth season, which I think is a shame because mostly it was incredibly enjoyable and with plenty to recommend it for. The aspects of the episodes that run across the season are well done, whether they are event driven, or more focused on adding detail to the characters. It does require that you stay with the show, rather than jumping in and out of it, but it rewards those viewers that stay with it. Not everything has immediate consequence, but I do like elements such as the expansion of who Bubblegum is in terms of the morality of her actions and approach – small things, but still interesting. Likewise LSP continues to surprise by how such a comedic and simple creation provides the most heartfelt plots (particularly in the 'Be Sweet' episode). The buildup of the comet and the power of Orgalorg does feel a little too much kept at arm's length until it is needed towards the end of the season, but I liked this constant foreshadowing as part of enjoyable episodes.

The standalone ones are a bit more variable but continue to provide some fun. Water Park Prank was probably the poorest episode in the whole season, but at least had the novelty of Ferguson's different animation style. Jake the Brick by contrast is a brilliant piece of writing, and really surprising in what it does, right here in the middle of a cartoon series! Others fall in the middle but generally the quality is high. The voice cast are all excellent, and the guest additions and cameos add value to the standard cast. All told, season 6 maintains the quality of the season before, providing plenty to enjoy in the moment but also in satisfying depth and development. We'll see what 'less heady' means when the new season arrives in the coming month, but hopefully it does not go too far away from what this show has been doing, because it is impressively great.

I've watched Adventure time from the beginning. It started off fairly crappy, but built up a nice mythos. The characters matured a bit and became likable. Then we get to this episode. Not only is it boring and lifeless compared to many other episodes, it also seems thoughtless and strangely stereotypical. How many other places have we heard the "dream of a butterfly" line? It's incredibly commonplace and the creators of the show didn't even change it up any. Additionally, the build up made by the comet was destroyed as expectations for a groundbreaking episode were nullified. It didn't really add anything more than that of the normal episode, but it used up the most anticipated part of the story arc to do it.
